Through hands-on experimentation, participants will explore the properties of local clay, the addition of minerals to enhance performance, and its use both as a clay body and as a material for surface finishes such as slips, textures, and glazes. The workshop aims to promote a more conscious, informed, and sustainable use of local resources, expanding technical knowledge of the island’s clays and their potential within contemporary ceramic practice.

WINTER 4-WEEK LIVE ONLINE INTENSIVE: JANUARY 2026
Join us for a four-week online intensive dedicated entirely to the surface, the skin of the sculpture. Led by Cristina Córdova, this program brings together a diverse group of artists, each offering their own distinct approach to ceramic finishes.
John Britt will walk us through the chemistry and craft of sculptural glazes for low and mid-range firings. Janina Myronova will share her process of drawing directly on clay, creating surfaces that are animated, graphic, and deeply personal. Beth Cavener will introduce her method of non-fired finishes—as exquisite and evocative as her sculpting. Nicola Moore will demonstrate how layered glazes can produce unexpected, even wild results when patience and experimentation align. Alison Brannen will introduce saggar firing techniques adapted for electric kilns, offering the unpredictability of pit firing in a more accessible format. Tomàs Barceló will explore the union of form and color in sculpture, sharing his personal techniques for polychromy that reimagine painted surfaces as creative and expressive tools. Jessica Dance will lead a 2-hour workshop, Abundance by Design: Manifestation & Strategy for Creative Growth, helping artists align energy, shift limiting beliefs, and design practical strategies to attract opportunities, income, and inspiration. Cristina will offer her own contributions, favorite glaze and underglaze recipes, curious combinations, and the thinking behind her surfaces. This course is an invitation to reconsider surface as a field of inquiry, one that begins with material, and ends with meaning.
All sessions are live and interactive, giving you the chance to engage directly with the artists and ask your questions in real time.

Building big opens up a different relationship with our creativity. Within the realm of figurative sculpture, large-scale pieces evoke a connection to the monumental and archetypal, drawing a different energy from which to let concepts and personal narratives flow. This workshop will explore basic, effective strategies for large-scale slab, pinch, and coil construction.
We will cover creating blueprints, sourcing clay bodies, tools, and equipment as well as drying protocols and firing cycles to ensure success. We will complement this with a surface lab to build a library of finishing possibilities. We will practice both electric firing and pit firing, which is a communal process that brings people together and creates unique surface effects.
