JANUARY 2025 - (enrollment opens November 1st)

Program Overview

This 4-week immersion is designed to transform and connect you to a diverse community of ceramic sculptors. Designed for all levels, the program offers the flexibility of a live virtual format while providing the accountability, activation, and camaraderie of live, collaborative group work.

You’ll learn directly from seven renowned artists, exploring a wide spectrum of surface approaches—from layered glazes and saggar firing to drawing on clay and non-fired finishes. Along the way, you’ll gain rare insight into the creative thinking that shapes each technique.

This program invites you to view surface not just as decoration, but as a field of inquiry, beginning with material, and culminating in meaning.

Faculty

This program brings together a remarkable group of artists whose practices span the breadth of contemporary ceramics. John Britt, a renowned glaze expert, makes the complexities of ceramic chemistry clear and practical. Janina Myronova is celebrated for her playful, graphic approach to drawing on clay, while Beth Cavener is acclaimed for her expressive sculptural forms and masterful non-fired finishes. Nicola Moore explores the luminous and unpredictable through her experimental layering of glazes, and Alison Brannen innovatively adapts saggar firing techniques for use in electric kilns. Tomàs Barceló will expand on the use of color in sculpture through his unique approach to polychromy, while Jessica Dance will guide participants through reflective practices designed to support creative growth and connection. Finally, Cristina Córdova, an internationally respected sculptor, shares her signature surface treatments and recipes, offering insights into the artistry that defines her practice.

Additionally, Jessica Dance will lead a reflective session designed to help artists ground their creative practice. Through guided prompts, simple worksheets, and optional audio exercises, she’ll help participants connect technical learning to their own personal journey, whether they’re pursuing art professionally or as a deeply personal exploration.

HOW WILL THIS WORK?

Throughout this month-long journey, you will engage in live sessions twice a week, led by founder and instructor Cristina Córdova, in collaboration with our ceramic masters. You will immerse yourself in demonstrations, lectures, one-on-one coaching and constructive group critiques. These interactive gatherings will be complemented by pre-recorded materials and written resources, providing flexibility for you to tailor the experience to your own rhythm.

In addition to the month of live sessions with the artist, we provide an optional assignment for each class. These assignments have deadlines for students who wish to earn a certificate. The schedule is demanding and requires consistent work to qualify for certification. However, students can also choose to attend just to learn from the artist without pursuing the certificate, or simply watch the class recordings at their own pace. We offer flexibility to accommodate different learning goals and types of students.

The only technological requirements are an internet connection, a computer, phone, or tablet, and Zoom. Once enrolled you will receive instructions for a full tech check to ensure everything is set up for an optimal experience.

Together, we will culminate our shared experience with a virtual group show and tell, where you will have the opportunity to showcase your work and celebrate our collective artistic evolution.

All sessions will be recorded and will be available in your course platform (Teachable) as long as the Center for the Study of Figurative Ceramics exist, ensuring that you can revisit the content at your convenience and keep it as a lasting resource for continued inspiration and growth.
