Fire Forms: Large-Scale Ceramics and Pit Firing in collaboration with Penland School of Craft
Building big opens up a different relationship with our creativity. Within the realm of figurative sculpture, large-scale pieces evoke a connection to the monumental and archetypal, drawing a different energy from which to let concepts and personal narratives flow. This workshop will explore basic, effective strategies for large-scale slab, pinch, and coil construction.
We will cover creating blueprints, sourcing clay bodies, tools, and equipment as well as drying protocols and firing cycles to ensure success. We will complement this with a surface lab to build a library of finishing possibilities. We will practice both electric firing and pit firing, which is a communal process that brings people together and creates unique surface effects.
